25 years on: the anniversary of the day that changed Derek Redmond’s career forever

1992 saw many monumental moments in sport. Nigel Mansell won his 26th Grand Prix before announcing his retirement from the track the same year. Nick Faldo won the British Open. UEFA awarded the 1996 European Football Championships to England. Tiger Woods made his PGA debut at 16 years of age. And, Derek Redmond went down in sporting history for the most gut-wrenching moment in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Thursday 3 August will mark 25 years since the Athletics legend tore his hamstring during the 400m race. Tipped for gold, the injury went on to end his career as he knew it. The moment however went down in Olympic history as his father Jim broke through security to help his son to his feet and help him make it over the finish line.

To commemorate the anniversary of this race, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are hosting a Facebook Live chat with Derek and his father. During the Rio Olympics the IOC re-shared the moving video of Derek at the 1992 Olympics which gained over 106 million views! During the Facebook Live interview, the pair will reminisce on the monumental moment and interact with the viewers’ questions. Derek will be sharing the time of the interview on his Twitter, @Derek_Redmond, so if you want to be in for a chance of getting your question answered, look out for the time on Derek’s Twitter.

The anniversary celebrations don’t end their either. As his management agency, at Champions Celebrity Talent Management, we are hosting an anniversary charity ball in Derek’s honour. On Friday 3 November, Derek and many guests will attend the lavish ball at The Dorchester Hotel in London.

The glittering event will see Derek and his father relay the story to the guests, and will also feature entertainment from 60s tribute band, The Overtures. Set to be a fantastic occasion to pay homage to a moment which was voted the third greatest Olympic moment ever by the US TV channel, NBC.

Tickets for the 25th Anniversary Charity Ball at the Dorchester are still available. For more information and to purchase yours, contact Lauren Ecob at Champions (UK) plc on 01509 85 29 27 or email lecob@championsukplc.com
