Why We Listen to Celebrities

Celebrities endorsing brands is nothing new, in fact the earliest examples of famous faces promoting products can be charted as far back as the 1760s when royals were used as a marketing device for pottery and chinaware. However, in the 200 plus years that have progressed since then, the majority of big brands now have a celebrity attached to them.

Think Tiger Woods and Nike, Cheryl and L’oreal or Gigi Hadid and Tommy Hilfiger. With the rise of social media showing no signs of slowing down, these individuals who were once ‘just’ celebrities are now using their fame and fortune to become the most popular influencers on social media.

One of the most effective ways to achieve widespread brand exposure is to attach your brand to a celebrity particularly one who has a large social media presence. Perhaps the best example of this was Selena Gomez’s work with Coca-Cola in 2016. As the most followed celebrity on Instagram, the pop star posted an image of herself sipping on the fizzy drink and it received a record 6.7 million likes.

Multimillion pound brands from the likes of H&M, Givenchy and CoverGirl have worked with numerous celebrity influencers which has increased sales and awareness of their respective brands.

One of the most successful type of influencer is fashion influencers. The fashion market contributes to three trillion dollars of the global economy. This shows how the industry represents big business and so using a famous face to endorse your brand can really make a difference.

A perfect example of this is Rihanna’s collaboration with River Island. With more than 74million followers on Twitter alone, she was able to promote the brand to an incredibly large audience. Without social media, the brand would not have been able to reach so many people and by using her social platforms in this way is a clear example of a celebrity behaving like an influencer.   

Just like fashion bloggers play a vital role in the fashion industry, beauty bloggers are equally important to their area. As well as YouTubers and other social media influencers, celebrity are also playing a key role for beauty brands.

Representing a billion-pound industry, the likes of MAC, Estee Lauder and L’oreal are frequently using influencers to support their campaigns. The likes of Nicki Minaj, Lorde and Lady Gaga have all contributed to MAC campaigns over the years and using influential celebrity figures such as these alongside the traditional beauty bloggers has helped the brand maximise exposure online.
