Jack Rex Burnell
World Ranked No.1 Open Water Swimmer

A star in the making, Jack Burnell became the first British athlete to qualify directly for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro following his performance in July 2015’s World Championship 10km Marathon in Kazan, Russia.

The Scunthorpe-born 22-year-old, who is at the top of both the British and FINA World Rankings, was among 70 swimmers competing at the Kazanka River venue, with the top 10 securing Olympic qualification. He finished in fifth place in a time of one hour, 50 minutes and 5.8 seconds, to secure his participation in Rio 2016.

Jack, who trains with British Swimming at the National Training Centre in Loughborough, initially focused on long distance events in the pool, and earned his first international stripes in 2010, finishing fourth in the 1500m Freestyle at the 2010 European Junior Championships in Helsinki.

He then achieved his first British Championship podium finish with 1500m Freestyle bronze at the London Aquatics Centre in 2012 before turning his attention to open water for the 2013 season.

Jack went on to secure a top 10 finish with eighth at the second leg of the FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup in Argentina before sealing a spot on the open water team bound for the Barcelona World Championships with a fourth-place finish at the Portuguese Nationals.

In two remarkable years, Jack has achieved the world number 1 spot, putting him in prime position for a medal in Rio 2016.
