With a career spanning 18 years between 1974 and 1982, Gordon Greenidge MBE was at the forefront of some of the most memorable cricket matches of the game. An opening batsman for the West Indies, Gordon began his international career against India in Bangalore. Part of a prolific batting partnership with Desmond Haynes, the pair scored 6482 runs together, the highest total for a batting partnership in Test cricket history.
Greenidge is widely remembered for his two double centuries against England in the 1984 Summer Test ‘Blackwash‘ series. Greenidge scored 214* in the second test, followed by 223 during the fourth test, an incredible feat of consistency and peak performance. Gordon played many seasons for Hampshire in English County Cricket, opening with Barry Richards for a number of seasons. Gordon began his first-class cricket career, scoring 37,000 runs and 92 centuries over the duration.
Greenidge has also proven his prowess as a coach, guiding Bangladesh to the ICC Trophy title in 1997 along with the chance to play in the 1999 World Cup. Greenidge was given honorary citizenship of Bangladesh thanks to his efforts.
